Doris' story

Created by Maureen 3 years ago

Doris was born in Dowlish Wake, near Ilminster on 15th October 1925. She was an older sister to Joy who was nearly 6 years younger.

She married Dennis on 1st June 1946, the man who was the love of her life. Two children, Christine and Maureen completed the family.

They lived in Sunningdale, then Windlesham and then moved to Frimley Green in 1967 where Doris lived until 2013.

Dennis died in 1979 aged only 56 which left a huge void in Doris' life. Despite this she lived a happy life with family never too far away and many friends.

Doris was someone who liked to keep busy and that often included helping people. She helped to run the Age UK coffee shop in Camberley, cooked and served dinners to 'the old folk' at the community centre in Frimley Green (lots of whom were younger than her), ran the Ladies Circle for a number of years and was an active member of the Inner Wheel.

She had many good friends, many of whom were lifetime friends; everyone who knew Doris said what a warm and loving person she was.

In 2013 after it became evident that Doris was suffering from dementia, she moved in with Maureen and Bruce. There she embraced village life as much as she was able, going to Shawfield day centre, church and the hairdressers. Whilst frequently unable to remember peoples names and not really knowing quite what was going on around her she nevertheless joined in with everything she could.

One of her greatest pleasures was her great granchildren and living with Maureen and Bruce she was able to see some of her great grandchildren on a very regular basis. She would play with them, do colouring, watch films with them while they explained the story and generally just loved to hear them squealing and running around - even if it meant getting in the way of the occasional  water pistol.

Doris had a good life, and will be sadly missed by all who knew her; family and friends alike.

Now she can rest once again with her beloved Dennis.

Much love xx
